Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most typical question that is asked when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and types available, it can be confusing for customers to make a choice between the two technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors provide superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with projecting a comparable level of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your room covering your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. Such is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel works like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as pros like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point when the projector is switched on to when the image reaches your screen is absolutely significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to form the projector image. Something to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your projector screen at the same time. The way a DLP projector runs is vastly different and even the produced image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to projecting an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then draw each coloured element of the image into a complete image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the top level of brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have included a white segment for the colour wheel to improve all over brightness, but this goes and lessens colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and as such must be better. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications as compared to the majority of LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be an advantage, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is used. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to view needs moving images, DLP projection technology also has image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because every colour is processed simultaneously. DLP developers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up issue, but the price of these projectors make them almost impossible for the majority of businesses and consumers.

Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and remember how different colours of light refract various amounts when passing through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light differently. Most of the time with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will be projected above and an extra blue will be projected below an image containing something as simple as a lone black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to remove these effects on the projected image, as each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.

The one real advantage (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant for transporting the device and cannot be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is crucial to you, then the decision is a no-brainer. Go for an LCD projector! LCD projectors will always make bright, colourful images with fewer image errors. As the Dutch found dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht was a pleasure craft used mostly by royalty and later by the burghers for the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, coming out of private challenges. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 punt. Yachting became popular among the wealthy and aristocracy, but after that time the trend did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and held great naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club persisted, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other groups, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated method on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to the throne in 1820, it was named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continuing site of British yacht racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the rise of George IV. Every member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large bids were held, and the club life was wonderful. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English held power. Sailing was for the most part for fun and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and created a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts took the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the later half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was initially greatly put upon by the victory of America, which was created by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its win at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and manufactured in today’s sense, with merely a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the use of the research of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what science had previously done for hulls.

Because almost all sailboats had to be individually custom-built, there came a need for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Hence, a rating rule was written, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and amended in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly blossoming areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for these boats can be done on an even par with no handicapping at all. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting belonged primarily for the royal and the rich, expense was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller craft happened in the second half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of smaller craft. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, during which steam was set to take the place of sail power in public craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were used increasingly in personal boats. Large power yachts were developed to a high element, and long-distance travel was a favourite occupation of the affluent. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave rise to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. Like naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the manufacture of large steam yachts. Notably among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service for World War II.

As more sizeable and more reliable internal-combustion engines were produced, many large craft started using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, progressed for World War I. During the decade following that, big power-yacht building flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that period the largest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of larger power craft lessened after 1932, and the style from then was in preference of smaller, less expensive boats. After World War II, many small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting is a widespread popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and keeping their own small leisure yachts. The amount of craft and sailors increased steadily, not only in the traditional places on the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are categorized by the impact they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that applies the same relative requirement on each taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income move in equal levels. A progressive tax is recognised by a higher than proportional rise in the tax onus in relation to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional increase in the comparable onus. Therefore, progressive taxes are seen as taking away the lack of equality in income distribution, while regressive taxes are seen to have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are normally regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are initially progressive, however, could become less so within the upper-income group—in particular if a taxpayer is allowed to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding some income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income demographics can also be more progressive if such personal exemptions are claimed.

Income measured over the course of a given period may not definitely provide the most accurate measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory growth in income can be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer may choose to pay for consumption by taking from savings. Therefore, if taxation is made comparable with “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save on luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the spread of individual income consumed or spent on a specific good lessens as the amount of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is not simple to dictate corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of uncertainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden rests for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being determined.

In regarding the economic effect of taxation, it is relevant to distinguish between differing points of tax rates. The statutory rates will be dictated in legislature; often these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Therefore, if tax onus grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income rises. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates are required to review provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) declines by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for assessing incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may depend on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the fraction of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates generally grow with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households might swamp these effects, allowing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that lessen as income increases.
