When you want to visit a town where you can either spend time just wandering around beautiful buildings and the sea, or get involved in activities that are occurring throughout the year, a visit to Southport – Merseyside is a great choice. Sitting next to the Irish Sea Coast, this stunning Victorian town is so picturesque that it has been a maintain attraction for artists and poets for hundreds of years.
There are three championship golf courses in town. These courses offer the kind of challenge that an experienced golfer will find a great experience. The Royal Birkdale Golf Club has been host to both the Open Championship and Ryder Cup Championship. Play right near the sea, or inland and have an entirely different golfing experience within minutes of each other.
The mature trees that line all of the streets of Southport are unique and a stunning display of color in the autumn. There is an extensive planning programme that has been carried out since the Victorian Times. Each development, change, or occasion is a reason to plant a tree and the care with which this town maintains the integrity of its home is an inspiration.
At the north end of town you will come upon Hesketh Park. This 12 hectare park is home to a stunning observatory, miniature golf course, children’s train that runs daily, walking paths, biking paths and wildlife. The ponds, Victorian gardens, aviary, rock gardens, glass houses and more provide the visitor hours of enjoyment. The Annual Flower Show held each year and the Botanical Gardens are a delight that brings entertainment, booths, food, and fun to everyone who participates.
There are annual events and festivals held throughout the year that you won’t want to miss. The fabulous Air Show, Classical Music Concert, Jazz festival, and Beer Festival that has over seventy beers are just a few. You won’t want to miss The Annual Musical Fireworks Championship that brings participants from around the world and has booths, food, and wonderful entertainment.
The Model Railway Village, open from April through October is a special treat that you won’t want to miss. The village was built and is maintained by a wonderful couple. There is also an Indoor water park that contains Splash World when you want to enjoy an afternoon of play in a wonderful place.
Water skiing, rowing, cycling and sailing is always available at the Marine Lake. A person who enjoys the water will be able to enjoy watersports all over Southport. Then, there is the stunning Victorian buildings, theatre, Meol’s Hall, breath taking gardens and wonderful shops and galleries. The Atkinson Art Gallery is filled with beautiful Victorian and 20th century oil painting and watercolors. There are many pieces of 19th century art at the gallery and a great little shop right next to it to spend some time.
Take some time to visit the Tithe Barn. This is a 400 year old barn that has been restored to it’s original condition. It contains original fixtures and features and will take you back in time when you see the wonderful architecture of the building. There are many other places that you won’t want to miss.
