Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most common question heard when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different types available, it can be overwhelming for customers to make a choice between both technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors offer superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph tells you why DLP projectors struggle with creating a comparable rate of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your house for your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And such is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel operates like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector switches on to when the content reaches your screen is ultimately important with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to form the projector image. A significant point to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projected surface all at the same time. The way a DLP projector functions is very different and even the final product of how an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to projecting an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then put together each coloured element of the image into the full image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer the best brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have placed a white segment for the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this also lessens colour accuracy.

I hear in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be superior quality. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of producing. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to most LCD projectors. At one glance, this seems to be an advantage, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is in use. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to project has moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all colours are projected simultaneously. DLP developers have formed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up problem, but the expense of these projectors make them almost impossible for the large part of businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how the different colours of light refract various amounts when shone through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light at different levels. Generally with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will come up above and some extra blue will come through below an image as simple as a single black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to reduce these effects on the projected image, as each colour is refracted on isolated LCD panels.

The one true buy point (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to portability and cannot be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht became a leisure craft used initially by royalty and then by the burghers in the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, coming out of private matches. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 wager. Yachting rose as popular with the rich and aristocracy, but after that point the habit did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and held much naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club persisted, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when joining with other organisations, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some organized method on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to monarchy in 1820, it came to be called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual location of British racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the rise of George IV. Every member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for high stakes were held, and the society life was splendid. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English took control. Sailing was largely for leisure and reached its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the second half of the 19th century. The style of bigger yachts was originally heavily impacted by the win of America, which was created by George Steers for a association started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its victory at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and crafted in the modern sense, with only a model being used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come about. Because nearly all sailboats were individually manufactured, there was a need for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were made. Today, one of the fastest blossoming areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to single specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be had on an even par with no handicapping necessary. A prime example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting was an activity primarily for the royal and the affluent, money was no object, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and desire of smaller yachts happened in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the value of less sizeable yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational boats became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, in which steam started to emulate sail power in market vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed increasingly in leisure boats. Bigger power yachts were developed to a high element, and long-distance travel became a favoured activity of the affluent. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave rise to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. Like naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of bigger steam yachts. Notably of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service during World War II.

As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many big boats began using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, advanced from World War I. In the decade following, large power-yacht manufacture blossomed, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that time the biggest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of large power yachts declined from 1932, and the trend thereafter was for smaller, less costly yachts. Following World War II, many small naval boats were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a internationally beloved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually manning and keeping their own small leisure yachts. The number of craft and owners is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional locations on the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.
